Disabled individuals to receive free bus travel at all times, announces Andy Burnham

The UK government has announced a return to a £2 bus fare cap outside of London, effective January 2027. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated this measure aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents amid rising living costs, particularly in rural and coastal areas where fare prices can be higher. The initiative is projected to cost over £500 million and follows a previous increase to a £3 cap under the former Labour government. Additionally, from April 2027, disabled individuals will benefit from 24/7 free bus travel, removing previous time restrictions on their passes. This change is expected to enhance access to work, education, and healthcare for disabled individuals, costing £60 million and funded by existing departmental budgets.

Why It Matters

This decision to lower bus fares and expand free travel for disabled individuals comes at a time of increasing economic strain on many British households. The previous fare hike to £3 was criticized for exacerbating financial challenges, particularly in less urban areas which have seen significant service cuts over the past decade. The announcement reflects a broader governmental initiative to support vulnerable populations, as transport access is crucial for social inclusion and mobility. Historical data shows that rural areas have faced a decline in bus services, with an 18% drop in vehicle miles between 2019 and 2024, making these changes particularly significant for communities reliant on public transportation.
