As Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves remain sidelined due to injuries, the Los Angeles Lakers are seeking increased contributions from their roster, including players who typically see limited action. Over the weekend, the team upgraded guard Nick Smith Jr.’s two-way contract to a standard deal, making him eligible for playoff action. Additionally, Bronny James has stepped up with notable performances since the injuries occurred. Lakers coach JJ Redick praised James for his improvement and emphasized the need for all players to be prepared for the upcoming playoff series against the Houston Rockets. James has shown potential, reaching double figures in scoring during three of the Lakers’ last six games and boasting a strong shooting percentage in the G League, where he averaged 15.6 points per game.
Why It Matters
The Lakers face a critical moment in the playoffs, requiring depth and performance from their bench players as they contend with injuries to key starters. Bronny James, despite limited NBA experience, has demonstrated significant improvement in recent games, particularly in his shooting and defensive capabilities. Historically, playoff success often hinges on the ability of lesser-used players to step up when starters are unavailable. With the playoffs being a platform for younger players to prove their worth, this series against the Rockets presents a pivotal opportunity for James and others to establish themselves in the league.
