DHS denies claim of ICE assaulting asylum seeker in Baltimore

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded to claims by Senator Chris Van Hollen that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents physically assaulted an “asylum seeker.” DHS clarified that the individual, Ever Omar Alvarenga-Rios, is a Honduran illegal immigrant with a removal order from 2018. During an attempted arrest in Baltimore, Alvarenga allegedly evaded officers, drove recklessly, and caused a multi-vehicle crash. DHS stated that he fled on foot and that ICE agents used necessary force to effect the arrest, resulting in injuries to two officers. Van Hollen countered by highlighting Alvarenga’s injuries and alleging that ICE was obstructing his access to legal representation while he was hospitalized.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between immigration enforcement practices and the rights of individuals facing deportation. The case highlights the complexities of U.S. immigration law, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals who are undocumented. With a significant number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., the policies and actions of ICE draw considerable public and political scrutiny, particularly in the context of claims of abuse and due process violations. The incident may also reflect broader debates around sanctuary policies and the responsibilities of local and federal authorities in immigration enforcement.
