Massachusetts enacts law permitting abortions up to birth

Democratic Governor Maura Healey has signed a new law in Massachusetts, removing gestational limits on abortion, making it the tenth state to allow the procedure up to birth. The Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act grants healthcare providers more discretion in performing late-term abortions without the legal penalties previously associated with state restrictions. Healey emphasized that the law aims to support families facing severe medical complications late in pregnancy, allowing them to access necessary care within the state. The legislation is set to take effect in 90 days, as Healey reaffirmed her commitment to keeping abortion safe and accessible in Massachusetts. The state now joins others like Alaska, Colorado, and Maryland in eliminating gestational limits on abortion.

Why It Matters

This legislation reflects a broader trend among some states to expand abortion access in response to shifting political landscapes and the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court. Historically, Massachusetts had limited abortions after 24 weeks, with exceptions, but the new law aligns with the interests of advocates who argue for women’s autonomy in healthcare decisions. Currently, the United States is one of only a few countries that permit abortion throughout pregnancy, highlighting ongoing national debates over reproductive rights. The passage of such laws signifies a significant policy shift amid increasing tensions surrounding abortion access across the country.
