What You Need to Know
• Three additional schoolchildren have died from injuries sustained in a bus crash in eastern Uganda.
• The accident involved a bus from King David Junior School returning from Sipi Falls on July 14, 2026.
• Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports has halted all school trips pending an investigation into the incident.

Three more schoolchildren have died from injuries sustained in a bus crash in eastern Uganda, bringing the total fatalities to 23 children and one adult, according to police. The bus, carrying students and teachers from King David Junior School in Kampala, was returning from a trip to Sipi Falls when the accident occurred on the night of July 14, 2026. Police reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle in Chekwatit village, resulting in the bus overturning and colliding with a large stone. Six of the deceased remain unidentified, and the adult victim is believed to be the school’s founder and head. Following the tragedy, 23 injured children are still receiving treatment at Kapchorwa General Hospital, while the Ministry of Education and Sports has ordered a nationwide suspension of school trips to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the ongoing issues with road safety in Uganda, which has one of the worst road safety records globally. The Ministry of Education and Sports’ decision to halt school trips reflects a growing concern over the safety of students during transportation. Previous accidents, including a recent collision that killed 14 people, underscore the urgent need for improved vehicle maintenance and road conditions. The government’s response may lead to stricter regulations and oversight to prevent future tragedies.
