A “catastrophic failure” occurred at the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in Wellington during scheduled remedial work, according to Wellington Water. Heavy rainfall overwhelmed the plant, leading to raw sewage flooding the facility and spilling into South Coast beaches. Chief executive Pat Dougherty explained that while half the sewage flow was processed, the outfall could not handle the volume, causing a backup at the worksite.
