Nathan Chasing Horse receives life sentence for sexual assault

Nathan Chasing Horse, best known for his role in “Dances With Wolves,” has been sentenced to life in prison for sexual assault. A Nevada judge delivered the sentence after a jury found him guilty on 13 out of 21 charges, many involving a victim who was just 14 years old when the assaults started. During the sentencing, Chasing Horse remained defiant, claiming the proceedings were a “miscarriage of justice” and continuing to deny the allegations. The trial revealed that he exploited his status as a Lakota medicine man to manipulate Indigenous women and girls. Chasing Horse had previously been acquitted of several charges related to assaults that occurred after the victim turned 15 and began living with him. He also faces additional sex crime charges in other states and Canada, as authorities continue to investigate his actions.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the ongoing issue of violence against Indigenous women, which has historically been underreported and inadequately prosecuted. Chasing Horse’s conviction is part of a broader effort to bring attention to these crimes and hold perpetrators accountable. The trial, following his 2023 arrest, underscores the challenges faced by victims in seeking justice within an often unsupportive legal system. Additionally, the use of cultural exploitation in such cases raises important questions about the intersection of power dynamics and sexual violence within vulnerable communities.
