Rwanda sues UK over canceled migrant agreement

The previous Conservative administration had agreed to pay Rwanda for hosting asylum seekers, but the deal was terminated by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in 2024, with the Home Office stating that £220 million in scheduled payments would not be made. Rwanda is seeking a legal determination of the treaty’s obligations, while UK officials contend the scheme was ineffective and a financial burden. The arbitration proceedings began in November, and the PCA’s resolution may take years.
