What You Need to Know
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting nine states.
• The outbreak includes 1,947 confirmed cases linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico.
• The Food and Drug Administration is investigating additional growers while monitoring the effectiveness of the product recall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Deputy Director Gwen Biggerstaff announced that a significant outbreak of cyclosporiasis has expanded to nine states as of Friday. The outbreak has resulted in 1,947 confirmed cases, primarily linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms de Mexico. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that the lettuce was distributed to multiple states and points of sale, prompting a voluntary recall by the company. Investigations revealed that many individuals who fell ill had consumed food from Taco Bell in June, leading the restaurant chain to remove the lettuce from its menu. The FDA is also exploring whether other growers may have contributed to the outbreak, as they continue to analyze case data.

Why It Matters

This outbreak of cyclosporiasis is significant due to its widespread impact across multiple states, highlighting the challenges of foodborne illnesses. Cyclosporiasis is caused by a parasite that can contaminate fresh produce, making it difficult to eliminate through washing. The ongoing investigation by the Food and Drug Administration aims to ensure that all contaminated products are removed from the market, which is crucial for public health. With nearly 12,000 confirmed or suspected cases nationwide, understanding the source and spread of this outbreak is vital for preventing future incidents.
