What You Need to Know
• Foot traffic to popular restaurant chains has decreased due to a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to lettuce from Mexico.
• The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that cases have spread to nine states.
• Taco Bell experienced the largest decline in visits, with a nearly 30% drop in foot traffic.

On July 18, 2023, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that the outbreak of cyclosporiasis, linked to lettuce from Mexico, has expanded to nine states. As a result, foot traffic to popular restaurant chains, including Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Panera Bread, has significantly declined. Data from the foot traffic analytics platform Placer.ai indicates that visits to Taco Bell fell by 29.8%, while Chopt and Panera Bread saw decreases of 24% and 9.1%, respectively. The Food and Drug Administration has also identified at least one additional food product potentially linked to the outbreak, which has caused consumers to avoid lettuce-heavy menus and grocery items. Sweetgreen has reassured customers that it is not connected to the outbreak, while Taco Bell has promoted lettuce-free options in response to the situation.

Why It Matters

The outbreak of cyclosporiasis is significant as it affects public health and consumer behavior, particularly regarding food safety. The spread of illness across nine states raises concerns about the safety of imported produce, especially lettuce from Mexico. The decline in restaurant visits and grocery sales reflects consumer hesitation and caution in response to health risks. Historical data shows that foodborne illness outbreaks can lead to long-term impacts on consumer trust and sales in the food industry.
