What You Need to Know
• Cyclospora cases linked to iceberg lettuce have been reported in 15 states, according to U.S. health officials.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified six new states involved in the outbreak, including Arkansas and Iowa.
• Taylor Farms has recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico, which is suspected as the outbreak source.

On Wednesday, U.S. health officials announced that Cyclospora cases linked to iceberg lettuce have been reported in 15 states, marking an increase from nine states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Carolina are among the states affected. Investigators initially focused on lettuce served at Taco Bell, but federal officials have since identified Taylor Farms as the source of the contaminated lettuce, leading to a recall of iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico. Confusion arose when the Food and Drug Administration initially reported a false positive for a sample from Taylor Farms, but later clarified that evidence continues to point to the company’s shredded iceberg lettuce as the source of the outbreak.

Why It Matters

The outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness, has been reported in at least 47 states this year. Investigations into such outbreaks can be complicated due to the time it takes for symptoms to appear and the challenges in identifying common sources of exposure. Public health officials have noted that staffing cuts at various levels of health departments have limited their capacity to respond effectively to outbreaks. Understanding the source of this outbreak is crucial for preventing further cases and ensuring food safety.
