More than 1,000 US State Department employees, including 1,107 civil service and 246 foreign service members, were laid off as part of the Trump administration’s effort to reduce the federal workforce, which critics claim jeopardizes national security. The layoffs follow a Supreme Court ruling allowing the administration’s workforce reduction plan and come after significant voluntary departures earlier in the year.
