US Watchdog Finds Errors or Lack of Evidence in Doge’s $110 Billion Savings Reports

What You Need to Know
• The Government Accountability Office found that Doge’s reported savings of $110 billion are largely unsupported.
• Doge, the Department of Government Efficiency, was established during President Donald Trump’s second term and closed last month.
• Elon Musk, who led Doge until May 2025, initially promised annual savings of $2 trillion through various cost-cutting measures.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report on Thursday stating that estimates made by the Department of Government Efficiency, known as Doge, regarding its savings of billions of dollars are “incorrect or lack supporting evidence.” The GAO reviewed Doge’s claims about its Wall of Receipts, which reported $110 billion in savings across contracts, grants, and leases, and identified several issues that limit the reliability of these figures. Doge, which was not an official government department, was created at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term but ceased operations last month. Despite claims of saving $214 billion, the GAO noted that Doge lacked transparency in its methods, with 96% of reported savings unverified.

Why It Matters

This report is significant as it scrutinizes the financial claims made by a government efficiency initiative under President Donald Trump. The findings raise concerns about the accountability and transparency of government spending reduction efforts. Historically, initiatives like Doge are intended to streamline government operations and reduce waste, but the GAO’s assessment highlights potential misrepresentation of savings. This scrutiny could impact future government efficiency programs and their credibility.
