Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson to miss approximately one month with oblique strain

The Chicago Cubs have placed shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain sustained during a recent game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Craig Counsell anticipates that Swanson will be sidelined for approximately four weeks. In his absence, second baseman Nico Hoerner has shifted to shortstop for the Cubs’ game against the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field. This season, Swanson has recorded a batting average of .216, alongside 18 home runs and 66 RBIs over 119 games played. Additionally, the Cubs have made several roster adjustments, including placing right-hander Edward Cabrera on the 15-day injured list for a blister on his right middle finger and moving Daniel Palencia to the 60-day injured list. The team has also recalled outfielder Kevin Alcantara and right-hander Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa while signing infielder Owen Miller to a contract.

Why It Matters

Injuries to key players like Dansby Swanson can significantly impact a team’s performance, particularly as the MLB season heads into the critical final stretch. Swanson, a two-time All-Star, has been a vital contributor to the Cubs’ offense, and his absence could affect their playoff aspirations. Historically, teams that lose their star players often struggle to maintain momentum, underscoring the importance of depth in the roster. The Cubs’ recent roster moves indicate a proactive approach to managing injuries while seeking to remain competitive in the National League.
