Cuba restores power after third nationwide blackout in six months

Cubans began restoring power on Tuesday after a nationwide blackout affected all 9.6 million residents. This outage, the third of the year, was caused by a fuel shortage exacerbated by U.S. sanctions, which have severely limited oil supplies to the island. The state electricity company, Union Electrica (UNE), announced a “total disconnection” on Monday, leaving the country in darkness. By Tuesday, power had been returned to over 30% of Havana, including critical facilities like medical centers and water distribution sites. The blackout is part of a broader pattern of energy crises in Cuba, with numerous outages occurring since late 2024, largely due to the aging infrastructure and inadequate fuel supplies.

Why It Matters

Cuba’s ongoing energy crisis is a result of a combination of U.S. sanctions, which have restricted fuel imports since January, and an outdated power generation system primarily reliant on Soviet-era technology. The decline in energy availability has led to severe economic and humanitarian challenges, including food and medical shortages. The U.S. has only allowed minimal oil shipments to Cuba, which has worsened the situation and prompted accusations from Cuban leadership of deliberately fostering unrest. The international community, including the United Nations, has raised concerns about the resultant humanitarian crisis, highlighting the urgency of addressing both the energy shortages and the broader implications of U.S. policies on Cuba’s stability.
