Craig Nolte, a 56-year-old carpenter from Ballina, NSW, died after being bitten by a bat while attempting to rescue it in November 2024, despite receiving the rabies vaccine. His wife, Robyn, expressed her confusion over the vaccine’s ineffectiveness, as he became critically ill and was the first confirmed human case of lyssavirus in NSW, which is rarely fatal.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5: An Australian man named Craig Nolte died after being bitten by a bat while trying to help it, and his wife is confused about why he got very sick even though he received a special shot to prevent rabies.
