Potential crack in California chemical tank may reduce explosion risk

LA PALMA, Calif. — Officials have identified a potential crack in a 7,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a toxic chemical, at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California. This development, discovered during a visual inspection, could relieve pressure inside the tank and potentially reduce the risk of a catastrophic vapor explosion. Evacuations have been ordered for approximately 50,000 residents in the area, many of whom are currently seeking shelter. Orange County Fire Chief TJ McGovern indicated that while the crack may eliminate the possibility of a boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE), there remains a risk of other types of explosions. Air quality monitoring has shown no toxic air release thus far, and firefighters are actively cooling the tank to mitigate further risks.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the dangers posed by chemical facilities located near residential areas, particularly when hazardous materials are involved. Methyl methacrylate is widely used in the production of plastics and resins, and incidents involving this chemical can lead to severe environmental and health risks. Past chemical incidents in California, such as the 2015 explosion at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, have resulted in significant damages and health concerns for local communities. The ongoing response to this event underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and emergency preparedness in industrial operations to protect public safety and the environment.
