An Australian politician, former South Australian Liberal party leader David Speirs, has been convicted of supplying cocaine after initially claiming a video of him snorting the drug was a “deepfake.”
He was fined A$9,000 and ordered to complete 37.5 hours of community service following his guilty plea for supplying drugs to two men. Despite his defense citing stress as a factor, the magistrate emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the importance of public deterrence, leading to his resignation from parliament after the scandal.
