Bernard, a promising young athlete from Nigeria, began his journey in sports later than most, starting with football and basketball in his mid-teens. His introduction to American football occurred in 2023 when a coach recognized his potential and invited him to a training camp. Inspired by sports icons like Ronaldinho and Michael Jordan, Bernard quickly advanced in the sport and was selected for the NFL International Pathway Program (IPP) at a talent camp in Cairo in 2024. Former NFL player Osi Umenyiora, now an ambassador for NFL Africa, is helping to develop talent across the continent, noting the challenges in access to training facilities for young athletes. The growth of American football in Africa is gradual, but initiatives like those from NFL Africa are improving opportunities for aspiring players.

Why It Matters

American football has been gaining popularity in Africa, but access to quality training and resources is still limited. The NFL International Pathway Program aims to bridge this gap by identifying and nurturing talent globally. Historically, sports infrastructure in many African countries has lagged compared to other regions, impacting the development of athletes. As organizations like NFL Africa expand their reach and improve training opportunities, it could significantly enhance the representation of African players in professional American football leagues, addressing longstanding disparities in sports development.
