Texas mother of four released from ICE custody after over a month

A Texas court interpreter and mother of four, Meenu Batra, was released on Thursday after being detained by federal immigration officers since her arrest on March 17. Batra’s attorney confirmed that a federal district judge ordered her release, citing violations of her due process rights during the arrest process. Batra, who has been in the U.S. for about 35 years after fleeing India due to persecution, has four adult children who are U.S. citizens. Her attorney stated they are now working to secure a green card for her through her youngest son, who is in the U.S. Army, and they plan to expedite the application. Batra, who has worked as a certified court interpreter for over 20 years, expressed her desire to live and work legally in the U.S.

Why It Matters

Meenu Batra’s case highlights ongoing issues surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States, particularly the treatment of individuals with longstanding connections to the country. Batra’s history includes fleeing violence in India, and her status reflects the complexities of immigration law, particularly regarding asylum and withholding of removal. This case also illustrates the legal challenges faced by individuals who may have been in the U.S. for decades yet still encounter issues with their immigration status. The situation raises broader questions about due process rights and the enforcement of immigration policies against long-term residents and their families.
