Court clerk pleads guilty to revealing sealed trial exhibits

Former South Carolina court clerk Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and perjury for showing sealed court exhibits to a photographer and lying about it during Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial. She received a three-year probation sentence, with the judge stating it could have been harsher if jury tampering allegations had been substantiated. Hill also faced misconduct charges for taking bonuses and promoting her book about the trial. She resigned in March 2024 amid scrutiny and previously faced 76 ethics violations related to her conduct during the trial.
