Cook Government allocates $1.1 million for Lancelin rock wall project

The State Government has allocated $1.1 million to address erosion at Lancelin’s fragile dune system. This funding will support the construction of a temporary barrier measuring 110 meters in length and 4.5 meters in height, made from large rock bags. The total project cost is estimated at $1.2 million, with the Shire of Gingin contributing an additional $152,750. The rock bags are designed to protect the coastline for approximately five years, allowing time for a permanent solution to be developed. Coastal engineers and the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure have collaborated on the design, and the aim is to have the temporary structure operational before the upcoming winter storm season.

Why It Matters

Coastal erosion poses significant risks to infrastructure and ecosystems, particularly in coastal towns like Lancelin. Historical data shows that climate change and rising sea levels have intensified erosion along many Australian coastlines. The allocation of funds for a temporary solution highlights the urgent need for effective management strategies to protect vulnerable areas. As erosion continues to threaten coastal communities, the development of long-term solutions will become increasingly critical to safeguard both the environment and local economies.
