Congo reports 2,000 deaths in record Ebola outbreak

At least 2,000 deaths have been reported in Congo’s ongoing Ebola outbreak, making it the fastest-growing outbreak on record. As of the latest government data, there are 4,381 confirmed cases, with 704 patients currently in isolation. The outbreak was declared on May 15, and while it took about nine weeks to reach the first 1,000 deaths, the second thousand occurred in just three weeks. This outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which lacks approved vaccines or treatments, complicating response efforts. The World Health Organization indicated that the outbreak began in February, long before it was officially recognized in one of Congo’s most remote areas.

Why It Matters

Ebola outbreaks in Congo have a long history, with the first identified case occurring in 1976 near the Ebola River. This current outbreak is the 17th in the region and is notable for being the largest. The Bundibugyo virus, responsible for this outbreak, poses unique challenges due to the absence of vaccines or effective treatments. The rapid increase in deaths highlights shortcomings in the response, particularly in reaching remote communities, which is critical for controlling the spread of the virus and preventing further loss of life.
