Midway through Gov. JB Pritzker’s three-year plan to relocate half of Choate Developmental Center residents due to abuse allegations, Equip for Equality found barriers hindering the move to community settings, with many residents being sent to larger state-run facilities instead. Of the 123 residents slated to leave, over half have been moved to other state-run facilities, while 91% of those still waiting face delays. Issues include a shortage of community options, outdated paperwork, and inadequate mental health services, with efforts underway to improve transitions and provide more support for residents seeking community living.
