Colts waive cornerback who started last season after injury

The Indianapolis Colts have waived cornerback Cameron Mitchell with an “injured” designation after he was seen nursing an upper-body injury during practice. Mitchell, a fifth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2023, had been a part of the Colts’ secondary, appearing in eight games last season, including one start. Despite signing a new contract with the Colts in March, Mitchell faced tough competition for a roster spot among several established cornerbacks. He recorded 18 tackles, two for a loss, and four passes defended during his time with the team. The Colts have signed undrafted free agent Mekhi Rodgers to fill the vacant roster spot. If Mitchell clears waivers, he will revert to the Colts’ injured reserve list. Three other players missed practice, including receiver Alec Pierce, who is recovering from ankle surgery, and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who has a toe injury.

Why It Matters

Cameron Mitchell’s release highlights the challenges faced by players in the NFL when dealing with injuries, particularly for those vying for limited roster spots. The Colts’ decision to waive him underscores the competitive nature of professional football, where performance and health are critical for maintaining a position on the team. Mitchell’s previous season with the Colts showed some promise as he contributed defensively, but injuries can significantly impact a player’s career trajectory. The signing of Mekhi Rodgers reflects the Colts’ ongoing efforts to strengthen their secondary, especially amid the injury struggles faced by current players.
