A colossal squid, the largest squid species, was filmed in its natural habitat for the first time by the Schmidt Ocean Institute on March 9, 2023, in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 2,000 feet below the surface near the South Sandwich Islands. This juvenile squid, measuring approximately 11 feet long, is part of a conservation effort to understand these elusive creatures, which can grow up to 43 feet and weigh 1,100 pounds. The expedition, aimed at discovering new marine life, marked a significant milestone in deep-sea research, highlighting the ocean’s mysteries.
