Coast Guard Ends Search for Woman Overboard from Cruise

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing 77-year-old woman who went overboard from the Holland America Line cruise ship Nieuw Statendam near Cuba on New Year’s Day. The woman disappeared approximately 40 miles northeast of the Sabana-Camagüey archipelago, prompting an 8-hour search over 690 square miles. After search efforts concluded at sundown, Holland America Line expressed condolences and canceled the ship’s planned stop in Key West, Florida. The Nieuw Statendam, which holds around 2,700 passengers, had recently departed Fort Lauderdale and made stops in various Caribbean destinations.
