Coalition to Propose Rights for Small Businesses on Pay and Contracts

The Coalition plans to advocate for the rights of small businesses to receive timely payments, compete for government contracts, and participate in shaping new legislation. Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson will present these proposals in a speech at the National Press Club, where he will also call for a uniform definition of “small business” to be applied across all legal frameworks. Currently, definitions vary by employee count or revenue metrics. Wilson criticized the recent government budget as detrimental to small businesses, citing ongoing regulatory burdens that have negatively impacted the sector over the past four years. He intends to launch a “stand with small” campaign to gather input from small businesses on what provisions they would like included in a proposed Small Business Act, emphasizing a need for new economic structures.

Why It Matters

Small businesses are a vital component of the economy, contributing significantly to employment and economic growth. Historically, small businesses have faced challenges due to inconsistent regulations and economic policies not tailored to their needs. The proposal for a Small Business Act aims to address these issues by establishing clearer rights and definitions, potentially leading to a more favorable environment for small enterprises. The ongoing dialogue around small business rights reflects broader concerns about the economic landscape and the support necessary for fostering entrepreneurship in a rapidly changing market.
