What You Need to Know
• A bomb blast in a crowded cafe in central Damascus killed at least six people and injured 22 others.
• The explosive device was planted inside the cafe, located 100 meters from the Palace of Justice.
• This incident marks the deadliest bombing in Damascus since a church attack in June 2025 that killed 25 people.

A bomb blast at a crowded cafe in central Damascus has resulted in at least six fatalities and 22 injuries, according to Syrian state media. The Syrian Interior Ministry reported that the explosive device was placed inside the cafe, situated just 100 meters from the Palace of Justice in the Hejaz district. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which is noted as the deadliest bombing in Damascus since a suicide attack on a church in June 2025 that killed 25 individuals. Mohammed al-Dahabi, a nearby shop owner, described the explosion as reminiscent of violence during Syria’s civil war. Damascus Governor Maher Marwan Idlibi stated that those responsible for the attack would face punishment, emphasizing ongoing threats to stability in the region.

Why It Matters

This bombing highlights the ongoing security challenges in Syria following the civil war, which officially ended in December 2024. Despite the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, the interim government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa has struggled to maintain control and security across the country. The attack underscores the persistent risk of violence from various factions, including Islamist groups, as the nation attempts to stabilize after years of conflict. Historical patterns of sectarian violence and terrorist attacks continue to pose significant threats to public safety in Damascus and beyond.
