The world has recorded its second-warmest May, with global temperatures averaging 1.4C above pre-industrial levels, as reported by the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). This month contributed to the northern hemisphere’s second-hottest March-May spring, with a significant heatwave in Greenland attributed to human-induced climate change, which raised temperatures there by 3C. Experts caution that while the 1.5C threshold set by the Paris Agreement has not yet been technically breached, it may be unattainable without urgent reductions in CO2 emissions.
