Houthis kill six in first attack since Iran war began

Six people were killed and ten others injured when Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched missile strikes on a cargo ship in the Red Sea, according to Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The Yemeni transport ministry reported that the vessel, which was struck by three ballistic missiles south of the port of Mocha, caught fire, leading to the deaths of four crew members—three Pakistanis and one Indonesian. The Houthis claimed they targeted a ship carrying Saudi military equipment, marking the first fatal attack on a vessel since hostilities escalated following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. In a second missile strike, rescuers attempting to evacuate the ship were targeted. This incident occurs amid a breakdown of a ceasefire in Yemen’s civil war, which has been ongoing for over five months, and highlights increasing tensions in the region as the Houthis have threatened maritime operations near Saudi ports.

Why It Matters

This attack underscores the escalating conflict in Yemen, where the Houthis have recently intensified their offensive against shipping in the Red Sea. The civil war, which has lasted for more than eight years, has drawn in regional powers, further destabilizing the area. The Red Sea is crucial for global trade, with significant oil shipments passing through it, and disruptions could have wider economic implications. The Houthis’ actions may also reflect a strategic shift in their military tactics as the long-standing truce has collapsed, raising concerns about maritime security in vital shipping lanes.
