Thylacine head sells for £60,000 at auction

An auction item initially thought to be an antique taxidermy fox has sold for £60,000 after being identified as the mounted head of a rare thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian Tiger. Originally purchased for just £50 at an antiques market, the specimen is one of only 101 known taxidermy examples of the extinct animal. The bidding at Auctioneum in Bristol escalated rapidly, with auctioneer Andrew Stowe noting that the room went silent as attendees intently watched the bids soar into the tens of thousands. This significant increase in value highlights the rarity and historical importance of the specimen.

Why It Matters

The thylacine, native to Tasmania, became extinct in the early 20th century, largely due to hunting and habitat destruction. It was officially declared extinct in 1936 when the last known individual died in captivity. The rarity of thylacine specimens, particularly taxidermy examples, is significant for scientific research and conservation discussions, as it highlights the impacts of human activity on wildlife. This auction illustrates the ongoing interest in extinct species and the value placed on preserving their legacy through rare artifacts.
