The conflict in eastern DR Congo has escalated since January, with M23 capturing Goma and Bukavu, raising concerns of a regional war. Rwanda claims its military actions are defensive against Congolese forces linked to the 1994 genocide, while DR Congo accuses Rwanda of exploiting its minerals. Despite ongoing tensions, both parties have agreed to cease fighting during peace talks mediated by Qatar, while Rwanda faces criticism for “sportswashing” through partnerships in global sports, with calls from activists for Arsenal to end its sponsorship ties with Rwanda.
