The City of Ekurhuleni’s task team is cracking down on non-payment for municipal services by businesses and government departments, focusing on Nigel following operations in Boksburg. The team cut off water and electricity to the Nigel Correctional Centre, which owes R3.3m, urging defaulting customers to utilize the city’s debt relief scheme to avoid service disruptions. The city aims to recover the R25b debt owed, with households owing R20b and businesses over R5b, launching the Siyakhokha Siyathuthuka campaign to strengthen finances and improve revenue collection rates.
