Chinese President Xi Jinping cautioned US President Donald Trump that disagreements over Taiwan could lead to conflict, emphasizing the importance of the issue in their relationship. Despite Trump’s positive remarks towards Xi during their summit in Beijing, Xi warned that mishandling the Taiwan question could push their nations into a dangerous situation. The talks also touched on economic and trade negotiations between the two countries, with China showing willingness to cooperate on various issues except for Taiwan.
Why It Matters
The warning from Xi Jinping to Donald Trump about the potential conflict over Taiwan underscores the delicate balance in US-China relations. Taiwan has long been a sensitive issue for China, which considers it a part of its territory, and any missteps in handling this issue could have severe consequences for both countries. The summit between the two leaders also highlights the ongoing economic and trade discussions, with China showing flexibility on other matters but maintaining a firm stance on Taiwan.
