China’s “Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress,” effective from July 2, 2026, allows the government to pursue legal action against overseas individuals and organizations deemed to undermine ethnic unity. Critics, including the UN and Amnesty International, argue that the law could justify transnational repression and forced assimilation in regions like Tibet and Xinjiang.
