China’s EV maker Xpeng’s Kunpeng system could boost vehicle range by 869 miles

Xpeng has introduced the Kunpeng Super Electric System, a gas-powered range extender for extended-range EVs that can provide up to 267 miles on electric alone and up to 869 miles when using both battery and gas, offering a practical solution for areas with unreliable charging. The company plans to add AI enhancements, quick charging capabilities, and flexible charging solutions to its hybrid models, potentially bypassing new EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and addressing underdeveloped power infrastructure issues. Xpeng’s pivot to hybrids aligns with the trend seen in other Chinese manufacturers, such as Li Auto and Nio, indicating a growing demand for extended-range hybrid solutions in response to charging infrastructure limitations in China and Europe.
