China has proposed a conservation plan to drastically reduce pangolin poaching, as these endangered mammals are highly sought after for their scales in traditional Chinese medicine. The plan aims to decrease the use of pangolin scales in medicine by 90% by 2026. Despite being protected by law since 2016, China still permits the use of pangolin scales from a stockpile, while other countries like Nigeria have taken steps to combat illegal trade.
