China condemns US for tweak to Taiwan reference; Washington calls it ‘routine’ update

China has urged the U.S. to correct its mistakes after the State Department removed wording on its website stating it did not support Taiwan independence, which was brushed off as an update. The U.S. emphasized its commitment to the One China Policy while making changes to its fact sheet on Taiwan, leading to criticism from Beijing. Taiwan welcomed the update as a positive sign of its close partnership with the U.S., while Japan announced it would allow Taiwanese citizens to list their nationality as “Taiwan” instead of “China” on household registries from May.
