Ofelia Torres, a 16-year-old Chicago teenager, passed away from Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, shortly after advocating for her father’s release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was detained while she was undergoing treatment, prompting Ofelia to publicly call for his release and raise awareness about immigrant families facing similar challenges.
Shortly before her death, a judge ruled in favor of her father’s potential path to permanent residency, considering the impact of his deportation on their U.S. citizen children.
Ofelia’s courage in the face of adversity has been recognized by her family and supporters as a testament to the fight for justice.
