Shotspotter, Chicago’s gunshot detection technology, was being dismantled after the city’s contract with SoundThinking expired. Mayor Brandon Johnson decided not to renew the contract earlier this year, citing concerns with the system’s reliance on artificial intelligence and microphone sensors. The technology, which identifies gunshots and sends data to law enforcement, is controversial and is now being removed from the city.
