Gonzaga’s John Stockton celebrates alma mater’s Naismith Hall of Fame inductee

Fifteen years before Gonzaga became a dominant force in college basketball, point guard John Stockton emerged as a local standout from Gonzaga Prep, earning accolades such as the WCAC Player of the Year in 1984. He was drafted 16th overall by the Utah Jazz in the same year and later became the NBA’s all-time assists leader, being inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2009. This week, Gonzaga’s head coach Mark Few joined Stockton in the Hall of Fame, a remarkable achievement for the small Jesuit school in Spokane, which previously had limited representation in such prestigious circles. Few, who has led Gonzaga through a successful 25-year career, expressed his admiration for Stockton and the significance of their shared honor. The enshrinement ceremony included presenters who are already Hall of Famers, with Stockton being Few’s first choice to join him on stage.

Why It Matters

Gonzaga’s ascent in college basketball is notable as it illustrates the rise of mid-major programs in a sport traditionally dominated by larger schools. John Stockton’s success as the first Gonzaga player selected in the first round of the NBA draft helped pave the way for future recruits, showcasing the potential of players from smaller institutions. Mark Few’s accomplishments further solidify Gonzaga’s reputation as a competitive program, having consistently produced NBA talent and deep NCAA tournament runs over the past three decades. This trajectory reflects broader trends in college basketball, where smaller programs increasingly challenge established powers.
