Queen of Katwe’s gambit still in play for Uganda’s slum chess players

Robert Katende, a chess coach in Uganda’s Katwe, continues to transform lives through chess despite financial struggles, having inspired over 4,000 children, including chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi, whose story was depicted in the film “Queen of Katwe.” Although the film’s profits did not materialize as promised, Katende remains committed to his mission, helping children and inmates develop critical life skills through chess.
