CFIA suspends licenses of Quebec frozen dessert manufacturer

Canada’s food safety authority has suspended the licenses of Abe’s Frozen Desserts Inc., a frozen dessert company based in Quebec, as of May 8. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) halted operations tied to two Safe Food for Canadians licenses following an inspection that identified multiple violations, including issues with pasteurization controls, sanitation, and record-keeping practices related to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. While the suspension mandates an immediate stop to production, it does not correlate with any product recall. The licenses will be reinstated once the company addresses the identified issues; however, if corrective actions are not completed within 90 days, cancellation of the licenses may occur. Currently, Abe’s Frozen Desserts produces kosher and dairy-free ice cream and pops, but its online presence is limited to an upcoming announcement.

Why It Matters

Food safety regulations are crucial for protecting public health and preventing foodborne illnesses. The CFIA’s enforcement of these regulations is part of a broader effort to ensure compliance across the food industry in Canada. Historical data indicates that lapses in food safety protocols can lead to significant public health risks and costly recalls. The suspension of licenses serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous food safety standards in maintaining consumer trust and safety in the market.
