A new study indicates that as many as 97.7% of National Football League (NFL) players who died between 2016 and 2021 may have suffered from brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. Researchers examined 878 former players, with 235 donating their brains for analysis. Among these, 215 were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease that can only be identified after death. The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, also highlighted a high prevalence of dementia among brain donors. Lead author Daniel Daneshvar, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, noted that NFL players experience a significantly higher rate of neurodegenerative disease-related deaths compared to the general population.
