Celtic is intensifying its efforts to acquire Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, 22, following their Champions League play-off against LASK. The club is also poised to complete a £7 million transfer for Bosnian World Cup player Ermin Mahmic, 21, from Slovan Liberec, independent of the outcome in Linz. Additionally, Celtic has made a £7.7 million bid for Frosinone winger Fares Ghedjemis, who has garnered interest from Rangers, Monaco, and Besiktas. Meanwhile, Rangers are fielding inquiries from clubs in England, Italy, and Spain regarding Nico Raskin, a Belgian midfielder. Rangers are willing to let Raskin leave if their asking price is met, as he has two years remaining on his contract. Scottish FA chief football officer Craig Mulholland is advocating for increased playing time for homegrown talent to boost revenue and strengthen the national team.

Why It Matters

Celtic and Rangers are two of the most prominent football clubs in Scotland, and their transfer activities significantly impact the Scottish league’s competitiveness and financial landscape. The push for signings like Gineitis and Mahmic reflects Celtic’s ambition to enhance their squad in pursuit of domestic and European success. Concurrently, Rangers’ willingness to entertain offers for Raskin indicates a strategic approach to player valuation and retention, which is crucial for the club’s financial health. The Scottish FA’s initiative to promote homegrown talent is aimed at fostering local development and improving the overall quality of the national team, which has faced challenges in recent international competitions.
