Newcastle United is reportedly in a favorable position to sign AS Roma right-back Zeki Celik, who is currently in a contract dispute with the Italian club. Celik is seeking €4 million per season to extend his contract, while Roma is only willing to offer €2.4 million, leading to a stand-off. The Magpies have been monitoring the situation closely as they plan to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window, particularly as Kieran Trippier may depart when his contract expires. Trippier’s exit would leave Newcastle with Valentino Livramento as their sole right-back, although Livramento’s future is uncertain due to ongoing injury issues. The potential acquisition of Celik on a free transfer would allow Newcastle to allocate funds to other areas of their squad.
Why It Matters
Zeki Celik’s situation highlights the ongoing financial challenges faced by clubs in negotiating player contracts, particularly in Serie A. With Roma unwilling to meet Celik’s demands, this could set a precedent for future negotiations regarding player salaries and contract renewals. Newcastle United’s interest reflects their strategy to enhance their roster without incurring transfer fees, which is crucial for clubs looking to balance budgets amid increasing competition and financial scrutiny. The potential departure of key players like Trippier and Livramento underscores the need for Newcastle to fortify their defense ahead of the next season.
