Somalia expresses security concerns over WhatsApp usernames

Somalia’s government has expressed concerns about WhatsApp’s upcoming feature that allows users to chat using usernames instead of phone numbers, citing potential security risks. Communications and Technology Minister Ahmed Osman Dirie stated that this change could hinder efforts to track and combat criminal activity in a nation battling an insurgency led by al-Shabab, an affiliate of al-Qaeda. The new feature is expected to be rolled out to WhatsApp’s three billion users globally, allowing the removal or modification of usernames. WhatsApp, in response, emphasized that the feature is not yet active and that users will still require a phone number to access the app, claiming built-in protections against scams. The Somali government has reached out to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, to address these concerns, emphasizing the unique context of Somalia’s economy, which heavily relies on mobile money transactions.

Why It Matters

The introduction of username-based communication in Somalia is significant due to the country’s ongoing struggle with al-Shabab, which has used WhatsApp for operations including extortion and propaganda. The Somali intelligence agency has previously shut down numerous WhatsApp groups linked to the militant group, indicating the platform’s role in criminal activities. Given Somalia’s reliance on mobile financial services, untraceable usernames could increase the risk of fraud and scams, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the economy. The government’s proactive approach to engage with Meta highlights the need for enhanced security measures in digital communications within a challenging security landscape.
