What You Need to Know
• French authorities ordered the evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula due to ongoing wildfires in Gironde.
• The wildfire, which started on Tuesday in Saumos, has consumed approximately 8,700 hectares of land.
• French President Emmanuel Macron has requested assistance from the European Union to combat the wildfires.

French authorities, including Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas, have mandated the evacuation of the entire Cap Ferret peninsula on the south-west coast of France due to a persistent wildfire that has been affecting the Gironde region for several days. The fire, which ignited on Tuesday, has already destroyed around 8,700 hectares (approximately 21,500 acres) of land. In response to the escalating situation, French President Emmanuel Macron has sought aid from the European Union, with support expected to arrive from several member states, including Croatia and Portugal. Evacuations are being conducted via the main D106 road and by boat, with around 20,000 people already evacuated from the area, primarily visitors to local campsites.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the severe impact of wildfires in France, particularly in the Gironde region, where conditions have become increasingly dangerous. The ongoing wildfires have resulted in the tragic loss of two firefighters’ lives while they were combating the blaze near Bordeaux airport. The request for European Union assistance underscores the scale of the emergency, as multiple regions in Spain are also grappling with uncontrolled wildfires, indicating a wider trend of increasing wildfire incidents across Southern Europe. Historical data shows that climate change and prolonged dry conditions are contributing factors to the rising frequency and intensity of such wildfires.
