In August 2024, shelling struck the Abu Sitta girls’ school in el-Obeid, Sudan, injuring 18-year-old twins Makarem and Ikram during separate classes. While Makarem was hospitalized with shrapnel injuries, Ikram searched for her sister, unaware of her condition. The attack, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces, resulted in the deaths of their teacher and 13 classmates, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, exacerbated by the civil war that began in April 2023.
